Umbria, Italy

East of Tuscany and two hours north of Rome, landlocked Umbria is a rural area of mountains, farmland and history-packed medieval towns. Known as Italy’s “green heart”, Umbria offers simple but important pleasures: fabulous food, bucolic countryside and a distinct culture based on its many food festivals or sagras.

With no international airports or motorways until 2006, the region was easy to bypass but as its infrastructure has improved, Umbria has caught the eye of more buyers. Popular towns include Montone, Gubbio, Assisi, Orvieto, Todi and the capital Perugia while family friendly fun is available on the beaches of Lake Trasimeno.
